The complete guide to photo geotagging
Geotagging adds GPS coordinates to your photos, making them searchable by location and preserving the memory of exactly where each moment happened. Learn how it works and how to do it right.
What is geotagging?
Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata — typically latitude and longitude coordinates — to your photos. When a photo is geotagged, anyone viewing it (with the right software) can see exactly where it was taken, often displayed on a map. Modern smartphones do this automatically using their built-in GPS, but many digital cameras don't have GPS, leaving photos without location data. Scanned historical photos never had GPS to begin with. Our geotagging tool lets you add precise GPS coordinates to any photo, either by clicking on an interactive map or by entering coordinates manually. The location data is written to the EXIF GPS fields, the standard format recognized by all photo software.
Why geotag your photos?
Geotagged photos are dramatically more useful and meaningful. You can search your photo library by location — "show me all photos from Paris" — instead of scrolling through thousands of images. Mapping software can display your photos on a world map, creating a visual travel diary. For real estate, geotagged property photos verify the listing location. For insurance claims, GPS coordinates provide verifiable proof of where damage occurred. Researchers and scientists use geotagged photos to document field observations. Even decades from now, your descendants will know exactly where each family photo was taken, rather than guessing. Geotagging transforms your photos from isolated images into a rich, location-aware archive.
How GPS coordinates work in photos
GPS coordinates in EXIF metadata are stored as three rational numbers for latitude (degrees, minutes, seconds) and three for longitude, plus hemisphere references (N/S, E/W). For example, the Eiffel Tower is at approximately 48.8584° N, 2.2945° E. Our tool handles all the technical conversion — you just click on the map or enter decimal coordinates, and we write the correct EXIF format. We also support altitude data for drone or mountain photography. The precision of consumer GPS is typically within 5-10 meters, which is plenty for photo organization. For scanned photos where you only know the approximate location, you can place the pin at the city center or landmark — even approximate geotagging is far more useful than none.
Privacy considerations for geotagged photos
While geotagging is incredibly useful for personal organization, be thoughtful about sharing geotagged photos publicly. GPS coordinates in a photo of your home reveal your exact address. Photos of your children's school, your workplace, or your regular running route can compromise your safety if shared with strangers. Many social media platforms strip GPS data on upload (but not all — verify before assuming). Our recommendation: geotag freely for your personal archive, but use our Remove Metadata tool to strip GPS coordinates before sharing photos publicly, unless the location is the point (like travel photography or real estate listings). You can also use our Edit Metadata tool to generalize coordinates to the city level rather than the exact street address.
Geotagging workflow tips
For the best results, geotag your photos as soon as possible after taking them, while the location is fresh in your memory. If you're geotagging a batch from a trip, work chronologically — it's easier to track your movement on the map. Use satellite view to pinpoint exact locations like a specific restaurant or viewpoint. For photos taken in rapid succession at the same spot, you can copy coordinates from one to the others. If you use a separate GPS tracker, many tools can automatically sync the track log with your photos by timestamp. After geotagging, verify a few photos by viewing them in mapping software to ensure the pins land where you expect. Remember to keep a backup of the original un-geotagged files if you ever need the pristine versions.
